Principal's Message 17th April

Kia Ora whanau o Fruitvale

Some of you may have heard the PM’s announcement yesterday about what will happen when the country transitions into Level 3 (date TBC). To  clarify further, we currently remain at alert level 4, and the government message is clear, when we move to level 3, DISTANCE LEARNING AT HOME is still the BEST DEFENCE!

Level 3 currently states that:
“Schools (years 1 to 10) and Early Childhood Education centres can safely open, but will have limited capacity. Children should learn at home if possible.”

At the moment we have no other details apart from the announcement.

This hasn’t been worked out yet by the Ministry of Education. It may look different for different schools around the country. Hopefully we will have a better understanding of what that means for ‘us’ as a school community next week.

There is a lot of detail to work through to organise the reopening of our school when that decision is taken and this begins with the Ministry of Education, before being filtered to principals. Please be assured that all leaders and staff at Fruitvale School continue to work very hard behind the scenes to not only provide our families and GEMS with support for relevant quality learning but to ensure that our school will continue to be driven by our values and remain a safe and happy place for all.

When more detailed guidance arrives from the Ministry of Education (they are currently  organising meetings with peak bodies to take place in the next couple of days), once we work through the practical issues that need to be addressed, we will provide the support you need to enable us, in partnership with you all, to do the very best we can.

At this stage, our initial thoughts are that our 'distance learning at home' programme is what is offered at school so there is no advantage of coming in to school over learning at home.  Many of you will not know about your work situations yet, so let's just practice the PAUSE at the moment and BREATHE.  We will work through this next phase together and keep you well informed.

So for now, please just carry on, keep safe, keep learning and enjoy conversations, play and being alive... almost on the other side of COVID
