Hi there. My name is Donal McLean. I have been in education for 30 years or so having started way back in the never never working with adults who were learning to read. This experience and being told by the peace corps in Guatemala to: “…. go home and get some training, we don’t need any bleeding hearts here” has led me to where I am now.
Fruitvale School is a great school in the West. We work hard to ensure your child and family feel welcome and have the opportunities to be successful in education, and hey education and learning is life. 2012 is our 50th Anniversary year and so I have the privilege of being the latest leader in a long line.
We are inclusive of all cultures and in the West all cultures abound. We are keen for your children to have experience with and become expert in the integration of the best tools for the job of learning. We are heavily invested in ICT but believe experience, sporting and cultural leadership opportunities are as important as each other and encourage all children to have a go in all these pursuits. We are low decile but this does not mean we are unsuccessful just a little poorer than other schools. This is no excuse for our staff and children, we expect everyone to succeed and to strive to succeed well…. And strangely enough they do succeed and succeed well. We do well in local sports and cultural performances and competitions and we do well academically. Each teacher prides themselves professionally on the difference they make to the children’s learning in their rooms. We have a great community of families that care about their children doing well. They want their children making the most of the opportunities available to them. Many of the parents help out during the day and are welcome in classrooms.
